So let's talk a little about:
Summer in Iceland
Summer is a beautiful time to be in Iceland. When I say summer, I am referring specifically to the months June- early September. I think it is such a special time to get married and the weather is perfect for anyone who doesn't want their wedding to be "too cold" or "too hot". I would say the average temperatures in the summer time can range between 46-57 F.
So, what should I pack?
Iceland is known as the land of fire and ice. It’s also known for its rapidly changing weather conditions.
No matter where in Iceland you choose to elope, its important to keep the weather close at mind, and know, its probably going to rain at least.. once(probably a lot more though). In my experiences, it will rain, and then 15 minutes later it’s nice again.
One great thing about Iceland is that in the summer months the sun is out all day long! (Helloooo midnight sun!) This makes it pretty easy to see all the amazing and beautiful landscapes you can, no matter what time of day it is.
So, let’s talk about what to pack.
In the summer months, Icelands temperature averages in the 46-57 degrees (F) range, versus winter months average around 26-36 degrees (F). I have definitely seen summer days that are ranging in the 60s and super nice out.
In this post we are going to focus on what to pack for a summer elopement!
DRESS
With the weather being ever changing I feel it is important to be sure that if you are wearing a wedding dress, that the material does okay when it gets wet. Not only will the rain be a factor in the wet environment, but if you are wanting to elope near any of the country’s many waterfalls, there is a good chance of getting misted, especially with larger scale falls. With the high possibility of wet weather and the terrain of Iceland, that there’s a good chance the skirt will get dirty, so if you want to avoid that as best as possible, maybe stick with a tea length, or above the ankles dress instead of a longer train. If this isn’t a problem to you, go for that long train/skirt! Another option is to change into your dress when you arrive at the spot you want to have your elopement ceremony / photos taken to try and avoid any extra dirt or mud. No matter what you decide, the images will come out so moody and dramatic which can be very fun, especially with the wind.
Speaking of wind– sometimes the wind in Iceland can be next level. Be prepared for that and if you are worried about hair, maybe stick to an updo or something tightly held together. Again, this doesn’t bother everyone and we can definitely have fun with the wind and get some dramatic photos out of it, but it is definitely something to be prepared for, because the weather doesn’t play around.
Whether your dress is long or short sleeved, depending on weather conditions and temperatures, you will probably want not only a rain coat, but some sort of jacket or shawl to keep you warm. For warmer days, light layer may be all you need! Remember too, when hiking it is possible that heavy fabric in a dress could get hot so if you think that could bother you, maybe opt for changing into your dress once you arrive or lighter fabrics.
SHOES
With the weather and terrain, I highly recommend shoes that are not only good for walking, but waterproof. Assuming you’ll be hiking a good bit, there is nothing worse than hiking with cold and wet feet, so I’d recommend getting shoes you love and that are comfortable and waterproof. I will link one of my favorites here.
You can also always hike to your location in boots / waterproof shoes and change for the ceremony/photos too!
SUIT
If you are wearing a suit, similar to my notes on the dress, you want to make sure the materials are okay getting wet, and okay getting messy with mud or dirt getting on them. Another important thing you will want to do is make sure its not too warm/ but also warm enough! A three piece suit is definitely great in the winter, but hiking during the summer can definitely get a bit warm.
JACKETS AND COATS
As mentioned before; jackets and coats are important part of your Iceland packing list. For your Iceland trip, one thing to remember: your raincoat is your best friend. I bring many raincoats with me to Iceland, varying in thickness and warmth level. As far as jackets go, in the summer months sometimes all you need is one thin layer, so your suit could be enough, and often with dresses people will opt for a fur shawl. In my experience, temperatures can change pretty drastically over time, so its best to be prepared for anything!
In conclusion: With Iceland’s ever changing conditions, I believe it is good to have options for all possibilities. I would bring a warm layer, light layer, rain coat, and your other wedding gear (dress, suit), and then when the day comes you will have these options to best suit the weather conditions at hand.
